Well more of a water filled blister in the paint..and the bottom of the arch had come away a little and was suspect..so...now it's like this!

Image

No before pic sorry and had to paint as it keeps raining!

Bit of repair done..

Image

And some of the removed metal..has has a plate on the bottom of the b post and no drain hole so inside had stayed wet...will re instate the factory grommit when the outer is done and flood with wax sealant.

Image

All in all a fairly minor repair but I want jack point as strong as poss (syncro-high lift etc) but just goes to show what a mere blister can be the tale tale of.

Yeah...and when all the inner layers are done the outer decides to fail in sympathy...it the iceberg syndrome..

If only they rotted from the outside in
I'm guessing this one didn't get the same treatment the single cab got then?

Very little work in it to be honest..it's a Transporter 3...more a yearly maintaince thing! ...when I had transits I would put a month a year aside for the weldathon...was never right but made it to wherever it was going..odd really my van compared to the sika...it has less severe rust but what it has/had is more obvious and difficult somehow...but the vans main problem is it all needs to be done outside as its too high....the sika lived in the garage for a year so got a bit spoilt..I could of just seamed out the van and called it done but I would be doing it again in two years time and then there would be even less metal lurking in the voids!

I had a look at the sticky backed Fablon plastic the other day and they only have a few roll ends left so no go there - sorry.

Finished off this repair tonight...well except for paint but will just get a bit of colour as van is getting a full re paint when all the rust and alterations are done...hear is the metal before welding finished..tacked on the front then seamed from the rear...then ground flat..

I don't know why i did the repair like this as I'm sure I made life difficult for myself! ..Image
Inside the arch..before the join was welded...

And after some naughty filler was applied..

The swage line is dead straight...the photo is making it look like had had a few when I welded it on!

Also, when I landed home this evening I found a pretty lady in a T25 Devon had broken down at the end of my road..turned out her tank was full of brown water from a rotted filler pipe...I cleaned out her filter ( no sniggering) but wasn't very optimistic about her getting where she was going but she has made it I'm told and I think I got a job out of this as she wants to get the van reliable...makes me feel warm inside. :ok

time consuming isnt it  thought the pattern lower B post had the hole ?or did you bypass a purchase moment or is it a customer experience its refered to
why do you think you did it the hard way with regard to the welding ?

No hole in the AH b panel lower...I joined the panel halfway up the flat bit..if I had joined at the swage I would of need no filler at all...also i cut at edge on the rear and curled the panel round at the front and joined it....made a weld to grind on the bit where the arch sits...and lots of filling and fitting to make it sit somewhere near straight!
