Adjusting enfloat without splitting the case

1.9dg, crank oil seal knackered due to excessive endfloat -well there are bits of shim in the seal.
Is there a way to remove the shims without splitting the case?
Thanks

Yes of course
The flywheel and crank seal come off and there are the endfloat washers to get at and replace
You would not split the case to get at them
Early or late engine?

Early engine,I'll have a closer look, but doesn't look like they will come off.Was a bit knackered buy the time I had got they engine out and seal off.
I'll try and get some pics. up.

Mig, might be worth dropping the oil out and having a look and what colour it is as this will give an indication of any possible movement/damage internally.

Right, quick update on this, oil seems O.K,but there are flecks of ali embedded in the seal,There are still 2 and most of the third shim behind the seal, but 2-3mm of end float,so I am guessing something horrible has happened to the crank, block bearings, or all 3 :(
I haven't the time or skill to re-build the engine,so it looks like I will be after a good used replacement,or I my just bite the bullet and stick a diesel in.( I know of a good 1.6SB and most of the conversion parts at a good price.
Quick question on the diesel conversation, can I leave the gearbox mount and linkage alone on the petrol box and "just" swap the bell housing and input shaft?
Thanks

sorry is this sounds daft can you just confirm you are checking end float with the flywheel on, it will be a few mm with the flywheel off

where are you?

Hello,

This may help... :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxykQb957xU" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Shows you how to do the end float..

Different engine..same technique..

If you can get the end float right by re shimming..

and If afterwards you can turn the motor smoothly by hand .. then I reckon it is always worth a try to save the motor..

At best you get ok oil pressure, no bad clattering , and a couple of years more out of it..

At worst.. with no oil pressure ...

you've got the 'core' for a recon engine..and you've had all the nuts off before...

Cordialement,

:ok
