1600 TD engine - where can I get info?

I've just acquired a1989 California Westfalia T25 with a 'vW Audi 1600 TD' engine.
I have searched this website, others and Google for info, but find almost nothing. I understand it to one of the standard engines, so very surprised it seems so hard to find information. I even bought the Haynes manual, but find it doesn't cover diesel! If I'm just being dumb, please help direct me to the right place.
I'm not a car specialist, but very capable of doing basic maintenence and servcing with the right guide/manual.
As a start, I'd just be happy with an engine layout drawing just to show me where and what everything is. I'm too far from being an expert to be able to look at a strange engine and just 'know' what everything is. But, with the right manual, I can work it out.
I would be grateful for any help or advice where to look.
Regards
Peter

Hi welcome to the madhouse.....do you have the engine number, it should be on the V5 if it's the original engine. the letters are the important bits JX......probably
The best manual for diesels is the Bentley manual I think, but there are many posts on here that will help once we can identify your engine type. A photo would help too

Hi,
try here
http://www.cs.rochester.edu/u/jag/vw/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and get a copy of the bentley manual in what ever form you can.
Cheers

hank you nevill3.
I find a number on engraved on the engine which appears to be preceded by 'V5' (partly obscurred). Then 163760
I can't see any JX reference.
I have quite a lot of historical paperwork with the van, but the most detail I can find on the engine is: 1600TD 51kw.
Regarding the Bentley manual, one comment on Amazon.co.uk says it doesn't mention the 1600TD. Is that true?
I've also seen an organge book with cartoon of T25 on cover (but can't find it via Google just now).
Having trouble uploading a photo of the engine.
Regards

The orange book you mention is probably the Just Kampers manual, you'll be able to find it on their website.

Try
http://www.vwdiesel.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The forums have a lot of info, go into the English section. Start with the FRQ and work from there, it will have all the information you need,
The Americans call the T3/T25 Vanagons

Thanks for all the tips.
Thanks rob1927 for directing me to the orange book. Yes that's it.
Does anyone have a view on its value (though £10 is nothing to hesitate about)? The one review says: 'not enough diagrams'.

It will almost certainly be a jx engine, as far as I know that was the only 1600 TD engine fitted to T25s?

What info do you need?
Or cut and paste this:
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... JXdata.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks to all
Martin - excellent! My engine looks just like that.
I do have a piece of paper that mentions 'JX', but not with any context. I also found this Wikipedia page listing old VW engines, saying the JX is a 1600 51 kW, which fits the bill.

That Orange book is pretty good value at £10. Has some good tips in the suspension section that you won't find in the Haynes and also a handy electrical diagram. Nice size too - same as the VW owners manual so mine kept in van with that.
Make sure you don't pay £33 or so on ebay for exactly the same thing from the guy who "makes no money on postage". Why would he when he makes 300% mark up on the product!

You buy the Haynes for the vehicle that the engine came from!
