Smoke on start up

My 1982 Westy 1.6D smokes on start up but only for a short moment and then it clears.

What is the cause of it?

Does it mean the engine is looking forward to it's retirement?

It's done 220 k.

mines a 17D 1990 and smokes big time on startup, been doing it for about 4 years, been told its the valve seals leaking allowing oil into the bores ?

My 1.6N/A always smokes on startup, just for a moment and clears. Smokes more on cold mornings. Is nothing to worry about at all.
My vans just clicked over to 180 000 of our good old miles and is going strong, still get 45+mpg and will cruise at 60-65 fully loaded with my trailer bouncin along behind :D

Thanks guys!

I was begining to get worried that the engine was about ready for the happy hunting ground or where ever it is that old engines go when they die!

It uses some oil but doesn't smoke when its on a run.

Vw quote an allowence for oil consumption in the handbook. I think it was 1-1.5 litres per 1000km. Which was more than i was expecting.
On the coldstart smokey reason behind i been thinkin, could be summit to do with lower combustion chamber temps on initial startup, on modern diesels its because they have electronic cold start switches to throw loads of fuel in, but thats far too technical for a T25 :D
