Hi All

I have a 1982 Westfalia Joker, Ivory Beige. The sliding door and rear door have been carpeted and I would like to return them to original factory spec.

My question is - would they originally have had door cards that matched the standard front brown door cards?

Mine match the other beige panels in the back i.e. formica type panels with the basket weave material stuck to the facing side. The front door panels are completely different and are the dark brown vinyl standard vw ones.

The slider and tailgate panels must be subject to knocks as both on mine have been holed when the other panels are still good. I guess you don't want to force either of these doors closed to squash things in if you have a full load.

My 83 ivory joker has dark brown front door cards. I have a matching slider with a slight repair to change it from a rhd originally to a lhd and the original, brown but not covered tailgate panel. Might sell them all as looking to go red!

Been meaning to sort this out for ages as had replacement card to trim and fit. Here is the bruised and battered original. Held on with plastic clips along edges and also three in the centre almost half way up.



The reverse looks like this - perhaps this is leftovers from the earlier vans with the wood veneer furniture before it went beige. I said above it was formica as I was thinking of veneered formica but it is actually thin plywood about 3 or 4 mm thick.



What I will replace it with was this shown after first trimming so still needs some tidying. This is a hardboard panel from one of the vw specialists out there. If I was doing it again I would go for a plain hardboard sheet and cut myself as this one needed trimming along the top to fit the u-shaped channel on the top edge. (similar to what the side panels slot into) The holes for the clips are slightly out, the centre ones missing and extra ones along the top as must be used on the VW door cards. The bottom left corner was square - although I have cut it to match the radiused profile of the westy one before taking the piccie. Still need to drill out a hole for the rear handle as well as the centre three clip holes. To start with I will probably paint it with emulsion but am looking into getting some lining to match the rest of the van.


Tailgate panel not so bad as this but the panel I bought to replace it didn't fit - seemed they sent me one for a bay but as I didn't get round to trying the fit until long after I had bought it I could not send it back.
