Gearbox oil quickie

Have searched the wiki and know that I'm looking for a gl4 or gl4/gl5 75w90, but should it be synth, semi-synth or mineral like the engine?

Wiki is wrong
£6 a litre from your Vw dealer for correct Vw spec gl4 ep gear oil
100 times better than any semi or full synthetic

The wilko stuff also fine. I know of at least three T25s with it in their gearbox. Aidan's recommendation is avoid GL5 as its corrosive to some of our gearbox internals. I think one or two get a bit retentive over oil grades and types and indeed sticking sometimes too rigidly to older grades where modern oils have moved on considerably. I get very smooth gear changes and its a quiet box. At the end of the day, you put in what you feel happy with, its your gearbox. The above recommendations are sound either way.

Just topped up my box today with the wilco stuff (Comma GL4).

£3.50!!!

Can't argue with that value.

Was going to decant it into a kids juice bottle to help me get it in the box, then when I went to open it....blow me...the bottle only has an extending hose nozzle so you feed it in to the box via the filling hole at the fwd r/h side of the box.

Just squeezed the bottle and it went in like a dream, nowhere near as complicated as the wiki made it look.

I also stumbled a bit when it came to getting the filling plug out as I didn't have a large hex key to get it out (17mm I think).

Luckily I found 1 bolt in my garage, with the same size head. Fitted 2 hex nuts down the shaft and turning on the innermost nut, used it as a homemade tool to get the filling plug out (it was stuck in there too!). All in the Haynes manual I'd hasten to add.

I also recommend making sure your van is on the level so you get the correct amount in up to the rim until it pours out.

Top tip for that if you have an iPhone... In the in built compass App, swipe across to the left, and you get a built in spirt level that gives you the % incline you're on if you place in on the floor of you van.

Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but I would have found these tips helpful about 12 hours ago :lol:
