Sorry to hear of your woes, I cant make much out from the video but I would start with checking exhaust for blows or loose fittings, and maybe trying to listen to the water pump long screwdriver to ear technique, carefull with the pulleys and belts though

A blown exhaust/gasket can make a horrible noise almost like something is terminal. Try puttin your hand over the tailpipe (careful you don't burn yourself). If you have a leak you will hear it. If not you will feel the exhaust gases build up. Also As has been said pop the rocker cover off and check

Whip the fan belt off and check for play in the waterpump pulley/bearing
when mine went the noise was terrible as the impellar inside hits the block.
where on holiday are you?

No play or leak from water pumps although the noise sounds like that. In Newport til Monday have had to stay very local to nurse the engine until I get to mainland. Incidentally there is a smalll leak to exhaust but on the other side of the engine away from the rhythmic clattering.

Take the fan belt off and start it up BRIEFLY, that will tell you if its the pump, if it is you may not make it home depening on where you live
if it is and even if you can find a mechanic you wont buy a pump on monday as motor factors will be closed but the offer stands if you want to buy mine its brand new a week a go from vw heritage i could meet you at the ferryport, just get a foot passenger return

Good idea to test the water pump, I'll try it when it gets light. Only just seen your message. Thanks for the offer
Noise is getting louder but ive only got about 8 miles to do to get back to te mainland. Is fitting a pump a roadside job?

I carry the right tools and experience to do a pump at the roadside but im not sure an aa type mechanic would do it
why does the problem stop when you get to the mainland? Are you very local or is it to do with recovery?
what time/port is the ferry?

Yes it was the cost of recovery to mainland rhat was concerning me. I'm queuing up for the crossing now. Pretty sure that its not the water pump having briefly run without the belt onthe metallic noise is from further back in lh head.
