Hi folks,
I own a 1990 type 25 which I have recently fitted a 1.9td engine to, it was previously a 1.6td. I had a few problems fitting it and getting it to run but with some help from brickwerks it now runs good, except, it can be smokey from time to time, when I start it in the morning to go to work it is fine, no smoke, but after about 500 metres I have to stop and wait to join the traffic flow, when I move off I usually leave a cloud of blue smoke behind me which continues for a few miles down the road, although on a longer journey it will clear out and I have no smoke, that is until I need to stop and wait again for some reason, then the smoke can come back, but not all the time. I have had a new head gasket fitted and the injector pump has been reconditioned, can anyone offer any ideas as to what might be the problem,

Have you got the right oil amount..4.5ltr including the oil filter..valve stem oil seals ok?
How much oil it using?

I have 4.5 litres of oil in the engine, it does not use an awful lot of oil but the smoke is very embarrassing.

How do I check the valve stem seals and how can they be replaced? thanks, Brendan.

I was thinking about possible causes,first check the two breather pipes are clear,not bunged up or creased,pull the pipe off going from the turbo to the inlet manifold and check for oil in it and the turbo.
The valve stem seals are a bugger to do without the correct tools,the camshaft has to come off etc.

It doesn't read like a fuel problem.
Although a leaky injector would smoke
I agree with dave, it might be oil.

I have removed the rubber pipe on the compressor side of the turbo and in my opion there is far to much oil in there, I put my finger into it and it came out covered in black oil , inside the turbo is the same, I have not taken the turbo of the van as yet as I use it everyday. I have been in touch with Brickwerk and I think I will buy one of their rebuilt turbos and hope it fixes my smokey problem, any thoughts anyone? thanks, Brendan.

Simple check for you-

Clean inlet tract so its spotless as you can get it.

Block the hole where the breather enters the inlet tract.

Route the breather into a catch tank-even if its just a home made lash up.

Drive it for a day or so.

If inlet tract remains clean/dry and catch tank is gopping then you know its crank case breather throwing the oil out.

If inlet tract 'downhill' of turbo is gopping then suspect turbo seals.

If you separate breather from inlet tract and catch tank AND turbo are gopping then you are just double unlucky.
