Thermostat fitment...

Hello all, been having a nightmare with the fitment of a new thermostat on a 1.9L Petrol...
When i took the old one off the "O" ring was at the bottom of thermostat but noticed that the pictures (and an old thermostat from another engine) that the "O" ring is at the top.
Was the previous owner just lucky?
