Valve or Cylinder problem

Taken our 1980 camper to garage today just for a check and have received the news that either a valve has burnt out or a cylinder has done and the garage don't want to repair it as they don't know much about camper. Not being mechanically minded this means nothing to me but he did say this was a very expensive job. He didn't exactly look at the camper in great detai, he found that fault and that was that - apparently that why sometime we have trouble starting her - silly me thought it was due to cold weather. The other week we drove her about 175 miles with no problems - she is a 1600 Aircooled version. Can anyone explain simply whether it would be worth repairing or cutting our loses and losing the van - or whether we could replace the engine with a recon or something. Help please!!!!

ok
well if i was you i'd be trying the breakers on here and asking them for a 2.0 ltr A/c engine, then asking either Brickyard(huddersfield) or Andy(nottingham) or Autohausby(sheffield) to fit it for ya .
If the body and the rest of the camper is knackered then... well thats up to you ..
Is the van still starting and driving ?

Yes the van is still starting and driving. The body is fine just working a little on the interior at the moment but that is just cosmetic. Agree that a 2 litre engine is better as she ambles about.

so its running ok , and you keep on top of the oil ... i would say get it look at by someone who knows about air cooled engines
is it down on power ?

Well its not the fastest, around town there are no problems as she has no trouble keeping up with the flow of traffic generally. She averages about 60mph on the motorway - uphill we lose power but then so do buses.

Glad I've found the thread

I think I might have missed you calling me back yesterday, sorry I was really busy and I hadn't got a phone number for you to ring back on.
Give me a shout if you get stuck

I'd still quite like to see the current engine compression tested before it gets binned if only because I'm inquisative

Due to the fact that we dont want to be spending loads of money on it and basically it being a case of throwing more money at it than we can afford unfortunately we are going to have to sell her. Were going to do her up over christmas (the interior anyway) and hopefully sell her about Feb/March time. If anyone would like to make us an offer bearing in mind she has electrics, fridge etc then please feel free. All offers will be taken into consideration but no time wasters please. Weve become very attatched to the little van even though have only had her a month or so and will be very sorry to see her go
