Please forgive me if this is a stupid question but I am new to the scene. Me and My partner just bought a 1984 1.9 watercooled petrol. While I was checking the engine this morning I noticed that the air filter was soaked in oil and there was a pool of oil in the base of the box it sits in. This didn't seem right so I sought some advice from someone who knows a bit more than me and they said that it was an oil bath and it was fine. I am really after a second opinion. The breather hose has collapsed as well so im wondering if this is the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou in advance. Jack

It may be behaving like an oil bath type but it ain't. clean out the housing, fit new paper element and hose and keep an eye on oil and coolant levels every day till you can feel more relaxed. It seems to be breathing a bit heavy maybe, as in excessive crankcase compression but its maybe early days yet.

My dads 73 bay had an oil bath filter so whoever suggested this to you may be thinking the T25 has the same setup. As Blacky says , clean it all out and fit a new filter.
Check they your oil hasn't been over filled.
Replace your breather hose, I believe Brickworks sell them . Keep us posted as to how it goes.

This happens when oil has been overfilled, i know of somebody who did just that.
it may no longer be overfilled so if you change the filter and check the level it may not do it again, but check it again in a few weeks and months to be sure.

worth noting those with lpg an oli soaked filter will stop it working on lpg but it will still run on petrol.

you have done the right thing always ask more than one opinion, some experts are not as expert as they think

Mine was oily be cause the oil was too filled. Drain some if needed. Replace filter.

had a look in my breather pipe on sunday and it had some 'mayonaise' in it,it gets used regularly but day to day it is only 7 miles each way,it is up to temperature,oil is clean does not use any water,the breather pipe is slightly collapsed where it goes under another pipe on the carb,could that be a problem?

A bit of a thread hijack but thats normal for short runs in winter, clean it out and keep an eye on it.

Replace it (with a proper one).

If the breather hose has collapsed the engine can build up crankcase pressure then gob up oil into the filter and houseing. replace the hose and filter, check oil level,, if it still happens then its engine rebuild time.

We have a thread hijack op has oil in the filter, hijacker has mayo in his breather pipe which has partially colapsed
two different problems two solutions

hijack again, where my pipe has slightly collapsed it looks as it was made that way,it is the correct pipe maybe it is buggered,thanks for the replies
