Hi,

Can you give me some advice/help. I bought my van last August and had it fully serviced and checked over. Everything went well for about 3 months and then I broke down a couple of times, I was told it was a fuel problem so I had all fuel lines and filters replaced and fuel pump checked. All went well until I took her out for a run to work and broke down again on my way home and had to be recovered. The following day  I checked fuel this was fine. Checked spark and nothing. I changed the coil pack and still nothing, then I took one of the connectors off turned it around put it back on and it sparked. Took her for a little run no problems.  Then got her out a couple of week later (04/05)for a run 20 miles or so everything good called to shop on way home and would not start, tried a dozen or more times then an hour started but would not tick over at first then when I put her in drive she would cut out as the revs drop. I then try and start her but there is nothing there when I turn the key ( this is the first time this has happened) this was intermittent and when she did turn over it took a bit to get the engine running. I think there must be a wiring problem somewhere but I'm no expert. Any advice, as I'm fed up of breaking down and wanting to go to devon in the summer.

First off. What engine?
It sounds like you have an auto gearbox?


What connector did you "turn around" I suspect you may have dislodged some corrosion or more likely its a coincidence.

First job would be to clean up all the earth connections to the crankcase and body work.
Inspect all leads for corrosion, and weak points near the crimp on connectors.
Be methodical.
Do one lead at a time, dont expect to remember where everything goes.
Be even more methodical.

Do you have a rev counter? does it jump slightly when you turn on the engine? does it move further when you crank the engine?

Hi Tony, it's a 2L auto 1980 air cooled, no rev counter, the connector I turned round was one one the coil pack not sure which one as there's a couple. I'm not the best when it comes to tinkering but I'll give it a go, I have a Haynes manual. Cheers.
