New box not lining up GTi conversion

Hi there hive-mind.

I'm midway through a CS diesel to AGG GTi conversion, and under good advice here, I've opted to replace the low revving 4 speed 6D box with a more suitably geared 3H box. I've utilised the input shaft, bell, and front mounting plate from the 6D. Mated the box and engine, got the carrier bolts in on the engine, all well and good. But when trying to fit the from box mounting, it's about 25-30mm (that's an inch/inch n a half in old money) forwards for where it should be, thus I can't fit it. I've got no gaps in the box- engine, everything looks as it should, but the booger just doesn't fit. I've even tried loosening the mounting bolts and scaff poling it back a little way..... Please tell me what damn fool error I'm making :-).
