JX Injection pump

Hi I was driving home after a 500 mile day trip and the JX just died. Up until then the performance had been good cruising for 200 miles at 60 mph The problem is the lift pump no longer seems to have enough "suck" to pull the fuel up from the tank. I replaced the fuel filter and blew through the pipes with an air line , all clear. The engine would run if the pump was fed from a can above the engine ie gravity feed
Removing the pump revealed play in the input shaft !
What is the likely reason for the failure is it some change in the fuel that is now sold ?
I believe the van has traveled around 250 k miles and this is the original part but as it runs in oil it should last!
