worn bushes...

Well i had my vans brakes checked at a garage the other day and they did say the antiroll bar bushes were on there way out... Im guessing they meant one of these two!
Is it worth doing all my bushes at the same time? I was about to buy some new springs. I Guess those may have to wait.

Is it just the bushes I need or will the metal parts be shagged now?
thanks folks.

Do the droplinks pictured (you'll need new washers and a new metal sleeve) or it'll be carp round corners. I bought my droplinks complete from B&B (ebay) but they're a pig to change as a complete unit. You should also replace the bushes through which the antiroll bar runs. Those are worth replacing with powerflex if you can afford it but droplinks are perfectly fine with stock rubbers.

Cheers, CovKid!
I've worked out I have a cranked droplink (and what one of those are!

) But I'm unsure of what size i need. Which bit do I measure and is there and easy way to do this?
Also, is brickwerks the best place, they dont seem to have the rubber bushes just powerflex ones. JK doesnt make much sense as they are quoting different part numbers for the same part?

Hello, this was one of the first jobs we had to do on our van, we got everything from JK. Our van is '83 so has the cranked droplinks that have the 19mm top bush, the straight ones ['85-'92] have a 23mm bush.

Yes, sorry i typed in the wrong size[19mm] instead of 21mm

it's the anti roll bar mounts that are 19mm.

Here's a link to some info that may be of help when you come to refit the bushes, the correct way to fit the washers etc. A bit of brute force and some silicon spray or washing up liquid helps when refitting the drop link with the new bush

Sorry to have to ask. I have a problem with early type droplink. I found on wednesday that theeye of the droplink had came off the rubber bush that`s been on it for 4 years. So I ordered after measuring the antiroll bar with a vernier, it measured up as 21mm. powerflex with a bushes from Simon. And thanks to him they got delivered yesterday. They come with sachet of copper grease. I fitted it but 21mm on a A reg van with dogleg style droplinks dont add up? Do you grease the inner and outer of the top droplink bush? As I was abit worried about taking it to Big Bang today so left it at home and good job. When I got home and went out in my van. Before I got out of my round I pulled over to notice now the droplink has came off the polybush in 24 hours. But what I will say is when it was being fitted. And was jacked up at jacking point and another jack lifting the wishbone into position. We got the pollybush pressed into the eye of the droplink no problem and got the same bush onto the end of the antiroll bar with force. The when he tightened the nut at the bottom after going throught bottom bushes washers and sleave. It pulled the top of the droplink half off the top bush? So how tight should nut on bottom be, yes its a nylock so I gues not much? Does the top droplink sit just over the ribbed end of the antirollbar please? Looking at the top picture on here I havent pushed it on enough?

Torque setting in the Haynes for the bottom of the drop link is 30nm. Mine sits just exactly where it did when i replaced it a couple of years ago- up to the lip on the end.The force it took me to fit them i'd be surprised if they came of easily. Did you put the drop links on facing the right way, do the other anti roll bar mounts look ok ?

Hi I think its that copper grease that made it slip off the 2nd time. So Ive cleaned the bush wiped the grease off. And I'll get someone to fit it onto the antirollbar in morning. Anti roll bar mounts are fine they are powerflex allready. Been on 5 years and still like new. I refitted the droplink same as other side friday. Early type cranked shaped. Come up straight from bottom and bend forwards towards front of van?

So finally got round to beginning this today!
Firstly, wooden wire brushes aren't for hitting things.

]
Secondly, the damn drop links were fubared!
THirdly, how the hell do you get the drop links off and new bushes on past the bit on the end??!
Thanks for you help all!

Getting off is the easy bit. Just slide the drop link to the end and bend it until the old bush pops off the end and out - the rubber will give way before either of the steel bits.
Putting back on is a bit more tricky. You need to part fit the bush into the drop link so that one lip of the bush is inside, and about half way through, the drop link sleeve. Use a vice to squeeze it in and perhaps a blunted screwdriver as necessary to tuck the lip in where it resists simple pressure. Then fit the end of the anti roll bar into the protruding part of the bush and as you push / hammer the anti roll bar into the bush, it will also push the bush the rest of the way into the drop link. I did see a video recently that showed this more elegantly than I can describe, but the link escapes me.
