Ive hada very good offer to plasti dip Myrtle possibly cos she looks so awful now it would be a hell of a transformational video. Its asort of rubberised spray on paint.

However I have loads of questions so if anyone has any experience or thoughts on this then please fire away.

These are my questions

Obviously you are going to treat any rust befor hand and the seams however is this paint going to mask any issues that start bubbling underneath?

Can you vat can the body work before and the seams or wil it react?

How long does it last?

How do you wash the vehicle

If someone dinks it or plays with a key how do you touch it up

I understand that you can just peel it off when you wanto change it so does this mean it is very prone to chipping(bearing in minsd i often drive up onto moors with her)

Because it is a rubberised paint wil it trap any moisture underneath

Not that we get much sun bu how does it stand up to sunshine wil it bleach or fade

the rust thats in there will stay in there and grow and sweat and fester and all hidden from your eyes till the coating falls off with bits of rust that was once your body,

Im going to be totally honest here I was going to pay someone to do the prep then rustoleum roller it myself. However I have ME/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Im terrified I wil start and run out of energy to finish. Its not the painting that worries me but the flatting back. I havent got anyone who can help me so Im trying to do best for Myrtle.

Myrtle may have passed her MOT and she had loads of welding done last two years but she is desperate for a nice shiny new coat.

I was offered the opportunity to have her plasti coat sprayed at a very very reasonable price. Its not a vinyl wrap. The reason I asked so many questions was exactly that, would it trap moisture in, would it hide problems starting to bubble under the surface? I love my Myrtle and want to be stil using her in 20 years time so I dont want to do anything that could cause more problems.

The guy who has offered it swears that as long as i have properly prepped it it wont be causing any problems and wil in fact protect her. Being a suspicious girl totally in love with her van im trying to find out more.

Can you get the sprayer to give you a few phone numbers of people that have had their cars/vans sprayed in this plasti cote stuff so you can get some feed back from them. I've never heard of it before but I've led a very sheltered life .
But as MM says about the rust eating away unseen , be very wary.
Could you have a family gathering and get them all round to help sand the van down. I know when I did Jambo it's a big job on your own.

Dont have family near Parents in late 70's both disabled. Son who doesnt drive 200miles away daughter who is preganat lives with partner in Liverpool. So iM rather scuppered.

£350 plus prep at 350 as i have already had welding don and i have vatcan for rust treatment

I say not

Prep is never going to be good on an old rusty van so you will need to keep treating seams and rusty bits every year and touching up the paint

Stay clear ,you could get a one day sand down prep and a coat of two pack for that

It'd want dipping like the notorious Dipsy splitty if you're going to do this otherwise the new look will be short-lived.

Also a name like plasti dip implies plastic dipped or polyester powder coat
This is rubber spray paint, got to smell a rat when the name does not describe the product

i think this only works on a car with good paint to start with
as for prep it just needs to be clean so no rubbing down and minimum masking needed
it's really a temp job

I woulld just like to point out some chemistry here.
rust is just a chemical reaction.
it is the product of iron (Fe) and oxygen (O)
Iron atoms are unstable and like to be stable, oxygen has a spare electrons, so they make love and exchange electrons and iron stablises to iron oxide which is stable
If you remove oxygen or iron from the chemical reaction then oxidation stops..

put plainly ....oxidation or rusting is halted.

sealing rusty iron in a coat of plastic will stop the oxidation process.

Hehe can't seal a van though
