Hi,
This is my first post so go easy on me!!

I`m in the process of getting my panel van back on the road only to find that it now won`t start after standing for 12months.

There doesn`t seem to be any petrol spraying into the carb port. I have replaced the fuel pump,fuel filter, cleaned the carb and blown out the jets, but nothing!!!

The fuel is getting to the carb because if I loop the return pipe around into the carb it flows petrol in and the van starts but runs really rough and will only keep going if I keep the revs up high.

Any ideas as to why this is happening would be great help to me as I am out of them!!

I have a 1.9 dg with a pierburg 2e3 carb.

Have you got the pipes the right way round?

What was it running like a year ago...

If it ran all right before.. then you may have still some 'crud' in the accelerator pump jet..

The brass tube from the accelerator pump into the venturi has a tiny aperture..to better 'mist' the fuel under acceleration.

Clean carefully with 1 strand of copper wire, and check that when you action the throttle linkage,, you can see a good spray of fuel down the venturi....

Well guys I have tried what was suggested but to no success.

Would it be the vaccum? new pipes etc?

Any other suggestions would be very helpful.

Is there still no petrol 'spraying in' when you action the throttle...

If this is the case, then the accelerator pump diaphragm may well be perished..

Carb overhauls are not difficult.. especially if you don't change any settings.

Even so, once you have got it running reasonably well, it is well worth getting the carb tuned properly..

you soon get your money back in fuel savings..

Are you expecting to see petrol spraying into the carb with the engine just ticking over or revving?

Because you won't.
As sarran says, the only time you'll see fuel spraying down the venturi is without the engine running and the accelerator is depressed

Hi,

So, I got a secondhand but tested carb and fitted it last week. It started on the first turn and ran fine. took ir out for a run for about 20 mins and all seemed to be good so parked it back in the garage being happy that the nightmare was over.

Went to start it today only to find that the nightmare wasn`t over at all!!! Same problem. Not starting and no fuel seems to get into the body its self unless looping the return pipe into the carb then it will start and run although badly.

I have changed the fuel pump,vaccum pipes, emptied tank and replaced fuel and new fuel filter.

Someone suggested it could be the bypass cutoff valve or a break in the bypass wire?
Once again, any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated.

Have you checked the tiny conical filter in the carb inlet is not blocked?
a 20 min drive implies fuel delivery is ok but that your system is blocking something in the carb as this replacement is now doing the same
