Horrendous judder in reverse...HELP!!

Hi,
I've got a 1985 1.9DG which isn't at all happy about going backwards. It makes such a horrendous judder that it feels like the thing is going to fall apart!! Very slow progress....Sometimes it will feel like it wants to pull up when driving too...loses power.
Is it engine mounts? My exhaust clangs against the rear engine support while all this is happening so turns a few heads!
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Cord

I'd deffo start by checking the engine mounts and the gearbox mount. Other than that it also could be clutch judder.

Hello,
Might be like this:
The 'silentbloc' change can just about be done with the engine in place, though you will need to lower the engine on a trolley jack..
4 in all, but it is the 2 outers that suffer..
Hope this helps,
Cordialement,

It may also be a loose engine to gearbox bolt - that'll cause it for sure. Make sure you check all four are tight as thats a cheap and easy fix. Make sure engine carrier is bolted up tight to chassis too (easily overlooked). Again, that can cause judder.
Can't think of anything else. I think we've covered them all.

Thanks for your answers chaps. I'll get underneath and check the mounts and bolts out when I get a chance.
Cheers,
Cord

Hi all,
Just to let you know that I eventually got around to getting underneath the van to check the mounts etc. only to find to my horror that one of the bolts holding the gearbox to the bell housing was loose and another was completely out!! The gearbox was basically coming adrift.
I've tightened up every bolt I can see and she reverses without any issues now...
Thanks guys,
Cord
