Hi,

Was going to change my rad switch today but I thought I'd test it first. I plugged it in and dropped it into a jar of boiling water (94 degrees actually) but nothing happened. Is there some kind of delay built in?

I have tested the fan by bridging and both speeds work fine so it must be the switch, right? Just seems strange that a new part is banjaxed before I start!

Anything I am missing?

1st speed is 89 to 94 degrees, your switch needs to be at that, if you drop it into water at 94 it will take a while for the switch to heat up, if the water is not on the boil i.e on the stove, then the water will cool down due to equalising the temperatures and it probably wont switch.

really need to have it in boiling water on the stove to test it, add a little salt to get the boiling point up

or just stop messing about, fit it and test it in the van

As he said^^^^^might have been boiling but by the time it is poured into the jar, air and glass will have sapped quite a few degrees of heat out of the water. The brass body of the switch and internal components will also take 20 plus seconds to 'heat through' all the time the water is cooling. 6 degree drop isn't much and easily lost.
It's a five minute job to fit ....out/in...you only loose an egg cup full of coolant....quick bleed from the brass bleed bolt....done.

Tis indeed a quick job. Changed mine outside GSF once Just have the new one in one hand ready as you unscrew old switch with the other.
