A standard awning situated by the slider has all the pluses.

Easier to park up alongside
easier to use access the awning direct from the van/slider - especially if you are eating in the awning

The rear one will get full of fumes if you want to run the engine
you can't get into the van easily into the rear of the van.

What about a rear hatch shelter? This one works well as our westy campsite shower room or you use it to store gear in?
