should i be able to hear the electric fan
had a little over heating water spurting issue the other day
also should the fan run on after ignition is off when the engine is hot
if my fan is buggered, a new stock one
or a beast of an aftermarket fan
which is best

I've often wondered about this. I always I suspected a fan, but it's never switched itself on. I saw it the other day, for the first time. Maybe one day it will switch on.

If you park front end up against a wall or garage door and let the engine run eventually either the fan will cut in, or the motor will overheat. Either way, it will prove what you wanted to know.
Fan should cut in when needle on the gauge gets to just above the led indicator light position.

your temp switch is kaputt(on the rad) wire a manual one on a toggle switch in the cab, when it seems hot, turn it on..... failsafe.

Or just replace the switch, it's easier.

you can certainly hear my fan when its on. Actually you hear it as it switches off - it makes the sort of noise that makes you wonder what is happening but of course nothing is 'cause its stoped.
I would expect the fan to run on after the ignition is turned off as the switch is passive (bi-metal or similar) and the fan isn't wired through the ignition switch. It was this that caused my last flat battery. I think the switch got too wet and left the fan running - at about 3A for a few days.

the fans hardly ever come on in normal use on these vans, and the temp guage will be at about 3/4 when it does.
the sender for the fan is in the rad NOT the engine.
