2nd gear

hi all, just a quick question, I have just swapped over my gear lever, under box and front linkage bar to a four speed setup as the previous owner had a 4 speed box with a 5 speed set up so the gears were hard to find but all worked ok once you could find them , after a bit of trial and error I now have all gears perfect except 2nd which feels like its catching , if I am firm and hold the lever firmly then it goes in but if I move it normally then it makes a noise then goes in when I apply more pressure at first I had to press down to get rev and 1st so I rotated the front bar with mole grips I spline and that has got me to where I am now, I also feel that the lever is over to my leg more that it should be , but the other gears seem good, could this be that the from link is in the rear link to far or no enough, any ideas would be good many thank gary
