I'm no expert (far from it) but have been having the same issues but haven't gotten round to bothering yet. I did however do a search for you and found the above, from this very same site.

Worth having a look I think. Hope it helps.

Bit more playing around
2nd,3rd,4th reverse are ok
Where 1st should be its 3rd and 3rd is where it's Spose
To be , if I push down to go into reverse I get 1st
And push further over to the left I get reverse
Any advice will be greatly appreciated

1. Mark up the join like I have in the photo by scratching a line on the front and back halves of the selector shaft.

2. Loosen off the clampbolt.

3. Take two pairs of molegrips (or similar) and grip both halves of the selector shaft.

4. Looking towards the rear of the van, twist the front selector shaft anti-clockwise by ONE spline.

5. Tighten up the clampbolt.

6. Try it out.

Hope this helps!

It's an old van, everything is common.
fixing it will be like painting the Forth Bridge.

I had the same problem and looked at the whole shaft under the van. I found there was an issue with the plastic linkage piece. I ordered the piece from one place and the rubber washers from another. Changed it with some copper grease and hay presto. 1st gear.

Check all the linkage bits first. They are easy to change either cir clips or bolts.
