Very well put together explanation of gasket change by Ken Wilford if anyone needs a duffers guide. In practice you can encounter probs on an old engine but it does give you a good overview on swapping out the waterjacket seals:

I watched all of it and learned at least 3 new things :-
How to use that "lip" with a screwdriver to stop the liners lifting with the head (see note below though)
Don't use a click type torque wrench (I did :twisted: :roll: )
Make 100% sure the pushrods are properly seated in the lifters (I didn't know that was a common fail).

Note re first "lift" of the head. OK, so after you first lift the head a bit, you can use a screwdriver on that lip to stop the liners coming up with the head. But, the head is usually "stuck" to the liners so when you do that first lift, you have already moved the liner a bit. He says he never bothers with the base "O" ring, but I am surprised that the base "O" ring is not damaged or impaired by that movement. On the two I have seen that "O" ring was well tatty looking on removal. However, he obviously is "the man", with lots of experience, so I guess he will be right :)

Re water jacket seal leaks. It is a shame no-one (I know of) in the UK offers a service like his. So many times an engine that is otherwise perfectly ok gets replaced with an Elite etc one or another used one :twisted: I have done just that (with a used motor from billy739 on here) as I don't really have the workshop space etc to DIY it. It is such a common fail that I am suprised that Elite (or someone else) does not offer this service, they are no strangers to fitting that gasket when they "re-con" (I know !) an engine.

Slight aside = I did do a water jacket seal once, in our front room :shock: but after re-fitting it the water leak had gone but one of those bottom seals must have been wrong because it leaked oil into the water like mad. Someone else had tried the same job for me on another engine and had a similar problem. I was about to give up on T25s when Billy739 offered me a good motor :) (that was about 7 years ago).
