Which Gearbox for 1990 2.1 T25?

What gearbox is best for a 1990 T25 2.1? What it has fitted now is a 4 gear change (from a diesel T25) and that one is on the way out too, but I'm thinking it should be 5 gears? I am new on the forum here (haven't a clue mechanically) If anyone could advise me on what gearbox it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

as long as its a uk spec van it left the factory with an AAP code 5 speed box
anything else will make the engine rev higher than it should
AAP boxes are hard to source and have a premium , but that's the joy of having a 2.1!
I say uk spec because as far as I am aware us and African vans only had 4 speed boxes with lower gears
you will need to see if you still have the 5 speed gear linkage / stick set up.
presumably you still have the 2.1 bell housing as this is needed for the injection
you need to check the code on your present box ' from a ... ' means nothing as boxs get swapped all the time. you could have a 50mph cruise box or a 75 mph cruise box!

Thanks for your reply, it makes sense what you say. By the way the van came from Germany, if that means anything. When it's driving in 4th gear the rpm are at 3 and the speed is 70kph (43mph). Any faster and it goes to 4rpm. I was advised by a friend to have higher tyres at the back to lower the revs. There is space for a 5th gear. Looks like I will have to start saving

oh the joy to come...

you will need to know the code from your present box ' from a diesel ' means nothing as some diesels have the same gears as petrol boxes!
you will then need to google gearbox codes and tyre speed calculator , it will work out for you the engine speed at mph. more accurate than what you think now!
doesent take a couple of minutes , and very easy!
