Hello,

Killing time in the warm sunshine......

A puzzle of carbs... :?

2 Solex Pist 34/4's.. with a heap of new bits.. including (at the top of the image) a rebushing kit...

Have you sussed out that heater yet or have the big toys taken precedence? :D

I have to confess.... the Eberspacher is sitting on a trolley..

heating the workshop... :)

The van is 'as was'..

and I have some new (to me) lightweight touring skis to try..

This week end the Parisians have gone home from 1/2 term holiday..so things will be a lot quieter..

As I've said on Camping.. it only takes too many people at once to swamp small tourist sites..

So it will be 'les Crouzets' Camping municipale (13€) for me..

Cordialement,

:ok

Hello,

Well, I had my few days off ski ing.. 8)

As usual..one Kombi amongst the white buses..

Image

Here is the 'dammeuse' going to tidy the pistes..

Image

there is a great view from the volcano..

Image

and so....back to the workshop....

Where I have been solving..a puzzle of carburettors... :)

Here is my 'spare' Pict 34/4 carb..

Image

These were excellent carbs.. used mostly on California spec beetles around 1974..

Basically an uprated 33, with a 28 mm venturi and different mountings and throttle control..

(not inter changeable)..

By the time VW dusted their stock off in 1979.. to fit to the CT 1600 engine.. they made 2 modifications..

First ..the cold weather accelerator pump booster..seen below..

Image

Which in California was a 'heat slug' device.. like this..

Image

sadly NLA, but on the CT they decided to to use a vacuum operated switch powered off the aircleaner..

it increases the 'dose' of petrol when accelerating from cold..

Secondly the 'anti VW throttle blip syndrome' damper..

Image

This 'wheesey' artifice will also only work if the whole air box system is in good condition..

And so to the puzzle...

Image

One would at first look..say..this is great, there is enough to build 2 carbs here..

Not so simple..

Image

As indicated by the pointer..the choke butterfly is jammed open by the simple means of.....

twisting the mechanism out of shape....

Notice the new gasket and aftermarket float valve..

On one body.. the vacuum switch screw threads are ruined..great place for a fuel leak..

Image

It gets better.. to try to 'rebush' the throttle spindle the screws have been 'got at'..

Image

So..looking at the rest of the overhaul kit..(Empi Chinese)..

There is not much I can use..the gaskets are all for other models..

Image

The replacement mixture screw is not well made..

Image

There is no new 'emulsion tube'..and the old one is a bit crushed..

Image

Needs a new 'pilot jet'...the ball bearing is jammed..

Image

Main jet worn out.. and attacked by a mega screwdriver..

Image

So...

I have been in touch with Jeff Carter at Gower and Lee..

The good news is that all the needed parts are available

Service kit £26.50
Standard main jet £5.50
Larger 130 main jet £5.50 each
Pilot jet £5.50
Air corrector/emulsion tube £6.50
We also stock floats, choke units & fuel shut off solenoid.
However, the thermo switch is no longer available from Solex/Pierburg in Germany.
Prices subject to carriage & VAT.

Tomorrow I will check out the 12 volt bits...shut off solenoid and choke...

Then we make a shopping list.. :)

Cordialement,
