How to clean rusty brakes?

Apologies if this should have gone in the wheels & tyres section.

I am looking for some general guidance on the best way to clean up rusty brakes - callipers and discs on the front and drums on the back. Sorry, I haven't any photos, but suffice to say they are pretty bad! Guess I'm really just after peoples advice on best tools for the job and best practice etc. Also, do people recommend painting after cleaning?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I get going on the job.

Cheers folks!

bead blasting (not sand or shot) will remove everything
