VW seem to have dropped a clanger with the design of these air vents. They seem specifically designed to channel rain into the voids either side of the engine bay. Has anybody produced a replacement, maybe with the vanes angled the other way? I can't believe that would affect airflow drastically, but it would cure the 'drip drip drip'. Maybe it would be enough to angle just the bottom few vanes the other way - say the bottom 3 or 4 vanes could be progressively turned.

If there isn't already an alternative on the market, what does it take to have a short run made? It's crossed my mind that I could buy a second hand pair, make some modifications with fibreglass and filler, and then use the result as a mould. Perhaps with the advent of 3D printing the modded version could be used to take a 3D scan.

I wouldn't worry. Why not wax inject the cavities and leave at that. I'm pretty sure that vw injected them from new anyway and that drainage provision was made or you would have two on-board water tanks

A lot of people drill holes at the bottom of the panel that the snorkel & opposite side to let water out.
I did wonder when I bought my van that mine were fitted upside down.
I'm sure if you did make some purists would slate them as " non standard cheap copies" so you can't win either way.

There is a company that makes large air scoops that are glued on to the originals.
They are meant to increase the airflow into the engine bay and air intake.

They are closed at the top so will reduce the amount of rain ingress.

They cost about 60 € a pair.

I saw a van once with a cable tie placed around this vent in a position which aparently stops the drip, drip, drip that drives people mad when trying to sleep, belongs to sassy on here.

as for water it should just run out of the rusty holes

I'll give that a try. Not quite as stylish as the stick on covers, but definitely better value.

Personally i sleep with my head at the rear and i hate having my head lower than my feet so always park downhill or use chocks, never get the problem as the water runs off the front

Early vans have the vents pressed into the panel, later vans have a big hole and plastic inserts

Nope! They are ugly and overpriced.

VW-Winkler do similar ones for 99 euro.
The ones that I saw were only 60 euro.
