Hi folks . Have stripped van ready for the paint shop, so was wondering what everyone uses for insulating there vans behind the door cards . Want to insulate the van the best I can when i am putting it all back together.thanks in advance

Alot of people use foil bubble wrap in the conversions as it is lightweight and most importantly does not hold water. I used foil adhesive tape for taping over the joins. More details in the wiki

The silver bubble wrap available in the big DIY stores on rolls. Its sometimes on offer. With the front doors its best to ducktape it to outer panel (here and there so it clears glass) and cut it so its like a box lid as best you can (ie bends in it so its against door edge). It doesn't offer a lot in the way of insulation but it certainly does help in winter. I found it cut external noise substantially too which is great at night on a noisy site. When I get the dash out again I'll do the front completely and also the roof (mines a tintop) when I come to replace the headlining. Yes - worth doing and its quite cheap to do.

2 B Q rolls bought last week end for the panel van. just waiting for high temp glue.

the cheapest I found for the foil bubble wrap was screwfix. I also used the recycled plastic rolls from bnq for the bigger bits.

Screwfix, £75 for a massive roll.

you don't need to glue it on, aluminium tape is good. I done my last van out in the silver bubble wrap. its better than nothing and did make a difference. Just don't expect 3mm of silver foil to be as good as 4" of rockwool.
When i get my van back from MM i'm insulating mine, i have a idea that i am going to try.. i think it will turn out really good and will be relatively cheap

In my humble opinion, bubble foil isn't a whole lot of use unless it has an air gap, and gluing it to the outer skin doesn't achieve that. Actually, that's not only my opinion - I used to do work for an insulation company that makes the stuff and that's also what they say.

I have also used this ^^^^ just stuck about 4 rolls of the stuff in my panel van, was then going to put in insulation before i board it out again.

30m2 roll almost did almost the whole van, its closed cell foam so doesn't soak up water, lightweight so no problem on the roof, with a decent high heat spray adhesive, seems to hold the heat in well due to the gold foil and it does reduce road noise. Although I do have extra insulation around the engine bay.


And do buy at least 3 rolls of the silver foil to tape it all together, you will need it!

The noise I hate comes through the poorly fitting sliding door, it reminds me every time I drive it I must change that noisy wheel bearing!!

I'm treating the sound and heat insulation differently..
For sound insulation I will use silent coat (unless I find something better when time comes to buy)

The built pack will be cut up and spread around the van

For heat insulation I've had the idea of copper pipe lagging (the grey foam stuff) like this

I will stand them upright in the cavities. I reckon this will work well, as you will basically have foam-air gap-foam.
The link about is for 19mm thick wall of foam, I think the 13mm thick wall version would be the right size for most cavities. (The insulation will have a diameter of 41mm)
It is also closed cell, so won't hold water and easy to cut. Just stand them up next to each other in the cavity, maybe some tape to hold them in place.

Spent hours looking through the web and the forum for the best ideas lloydy how has your tubing idea worked.out? The gold matting looks great but seems expensive. So far I've bought a roll of the b and q foil bubble wrap stuff although I'm now thinking closed cell is the way forward. What about yoga mats? And also there's advice about sticking it to the back of the door panels anyone tried this. There's so much conflicting info. So far its itchy fibreglass insulation out .... Nothing moisture trapping in, including recycled plastic. Any progress reports will make interesting reading
