Solex carb help required.

Hi Everyone,
I am a new member of the club having just bought a t25. I drove the van back from Scotland to Manchester and thankfully we made it without any hiccups apart from the fact that a strong smell of petrol developed about 30 miles from home.I am completely clueless when it comes to mechanical issues but even I could tell that petrol pouring out of the right hand carb wasn't right.Luckily the van came with some spares , a replacement set of second hand carbs being some of them. The carb was replaced and now not leaking , but also not running very well , a bit lumpy and racing when idling. So I bought a set gaskets and my Dad repaired the original carb and refitted it.Now with the original carb back on it runs a bit better in 1st and 2nd but is sluggish in 3rd.It also stalls everytime I pull up at lights (it did this all the way back from Scotland, luckily there aren't too many roundabouts on the M6) slow down for a roundabout etc.Do any of you have any suggestions that may help? I know further down the line it will be a good idea to buy a new set of carbs , but I don't want to spend any money until it has been for an Mot on Tuesday just in case there are more serious issues to deal with.If it fails with an expensive list of jobs it will be going up for sale.
The engine is a 2.0 l Aircooled.
Thanks in advance
Andy.

There is a steel pipe that runs across the rear bulkhead. This a balance pipe that is connected to each carb. On the left hand side is a rubber tee piece that also connects to the brake servo, on the right hand side is a rubber elbow. If either of these have "popped" off the van will stall at idle.
Also check all the spade connectors on the carbs. If one of the electrical connections has come off the fuel cut off solenoid that'll stop the van idling as well.
There are also short flexible hoses joining the metal pipes under the airbox. It's not so common for these to come adrift but these could cause a stall as well.
Setting up the Solexs isn't straight forward and it seems that a lot of owners bodge one setting to fix a problem and end up with a van that hardly runs. Have a look at this web page, it'll give you a better idea of how to set up the carbs and if they need to be replaced.

Thanks so much Boxy for your reply. My Dad has managed to get it all sorted. You were spot on , one of the spade connectors had come off there was also alot of movement in the lefthand carb which is also now sorted. The left hand choke/ flap ? Was permanently open and not working but after fiddling with that it's fine now and fully operational. The engine now runs perfectly. I took it for a quick spin and was amazed by the difference in performance. I'm not surprised it took nearly 7 hours to get back from Scotland , reckon it would do it in half the time now. Thanks again very much appreciate your time.
