Solex carb help required.

Hi Everyone,
I am a new member of the club having just bought a t25. I drove the van back from Scotland to Manchester and thankfully we made it without any hiccups apart from the fact that a strong smell of petrol developed about 30 miles from home.I am completely clueless when it comes to mechanical issues but even I could tell that petrol pouring out of the right hand carb wasn't right.Luckily the van came with some spares , a replacement set of second hand carbs being some of them. The carb was replaced and now not leaking , but also not running very well , a bit lumpy and racing when idling. So I bought a set gaskets and my Dad repaired the original carb and refitted it.Now with the original carb back on it runs a bit better in 1st and 2nd but is sluggish in 3rd.It also stalls everytime I pull up at lights (it did this all the way back from Scotland, luckily there aren't too many roundabouts on the M6) slow down for a roundabout etc.Do any of you have any suggestions that may help? I know further down the line it will be a good idea to buy a new set of carbs , but I don't want to spend any money until it has been for an Mot on Tuesday just in case there are more serious issues to deal with.If it fails with an expensive list of jobs it will be going up for sale.
The engine is a 2.0 l Aircooled.
Thanks in advance
Andy.
