Give us a clue - video of my engine running

Right, I've decided to take a video in order to give you a better picture of what's going on.
This is what my engine sounds like now and you can see the random rev counter displays!

http://youtu.be/Hz6btDqB1Gw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hope the link works, it's my first vid I've ever uploaded!
I've set the timing to 8 BTDC, the idle stops are at 1/2 turn after touching and mixtures are 2 1/2 turns out from bottom.
I presume the loud knocking is the hydraulic lifter on cylinder 1? What could cause the random rev counter reading? Is the slight hunting at idle likely to be due to an air leak somewhere?

Thanks

Paul

try spraying some WD40 or carb cleaner around the manifolds and carb, if the engine increases in speed ..you know it's sucking in air.

Hello,

We've just done some of this by PM.. :roll:

So those are the Bosals.. :?:

I'll need photos to show how the linkages work..

I'm sorry but I don't have much confidence in your tachometer.. :(

about as well calibrated as a T25 petrol gauge.. :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

Sounds like valve adjustment is needed..

I doubt if the hydraulic tappets have all pumped up yet..

Bring the tickover up a bit..and let it run for 20 mins

switch off.. cool 5 mins.. rocker covers off..(no spill if you are on the flat) recheck clearances.

contact plus 1 turn for the moment.

are all the visible screw threads of the adjusters about the same length.. :?:

Cordialement..

:ok

VWKat....I'll give it a go :ok
Thanks Sarran.....reply sent.
Yes these are the Bosals, I'll get more pics later if I can, but there are some more in here:

https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=123881" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The rev counter has worked fine before yesterday and not done the jumping about seen in the video. Could this just be due to a dodgy connection, or possible iffy coil signal, or just becasue the whole thing is running rough at the moment? It seems stable when the engine is running smoother.
I adjusted the valves yesterday......twice! I initially set TDC for No1 and then set the valve to just touching plus one full turn. I then repeated this for the other 3 sets.....however.....due to being a complete muppet and not having my thinking cap on at the time, I rotated the flywheel clockwise inistead of anti-clockwise. So that resulted in a little swearing just after putting back the second rocker cover and realising what I'd done :shock:
So I then set then all again, this time with the flywheel in the correct positions, to just touching plus 1 full turn. I must admit, I didn't look to see if they all looked the same, but I can do this later.
You probably don't remember, but when I reassembled the engine in a previous thread, I said that 2 of the tappets didn't prime, after being stood in oil for 2 weeks and regularly pushed down, before re-installing them. I'm now wondering if they are knackered, but I'll try your method to see what happens and will post again.

Thanks

Paul

Is it me or does that sound like somethings "chuffing" out somewhere. At first I thought it was metallic but when you listen as the revs drop you could almost think it was the exhaust port on the head leaking. No/Yes ?

Quick update, I've had the carbs off and fitted new kit from JK. The old gaskets were ok, ie no obvious splits etc, but the carb bodies themselves had a lot of surface corrosion on them both outside and inside around the gasket surfaces. So with the help of my Dremel type tool, I cleaned everything up, rebuilt them and set the basics again. They're now nearly ready for fitting back on the van but I need to check the setting for the accelerator pump first. Any hints on what to use to measure this would help :ok
One thing I was surprised at was the way the float works. You can't adjust it. It's just hinged off the pins and floats up till it shuts the needle valve. I thought all floats needed some form off setting, either bending the tab or putting in washers etc.

Any way.....nearly ready for reinstalling, so Sarran.....get that new video uploaded!!!!! :ok
