New T25 with AAZ

Hi, new member on here, from Isle of Man. My dad has bought a 1982 T25 with an AAZ motor fitted. I am knowledgable about a good few classic cars and rebuilt a good few from scratch, but VWs I'm not as familiar with.

We are sorting out the rust, luckily buying a scrap camper the same age type and original colour which has rusted in different places. But the engine install is concerning me. I took the van a run up the road, and gave the motor a bit of stick and suffered an engine runaway. Took the turbo off and checked it and all seems fine, checked oil level and it was overfull. We drained just over 1/2 litre out to get down to the marks on the modified dipstick, cleaned the oil out of the breather pipes, and refitted the turbo etc, it started and ran fine with no smoke (phew). I wanted to check roughly what is fitted so I can make sure it doesn't happen again.

Numbers on the turbo. Anyone know if it's the JD one or an AAZ? As the exhaust down pipe has been modified to fit.
The inlet manifold does not have a blow valve so I guess it is the AAZ manifold. The turbo oil drain goes to the block and to be fair it's a bit too horizontal but does work.

Our plan is to change the oil and filter and put 4.5l back in and check the dipstick marks. But if there are any other things I need to check can you knowledgeable guys let me know?

The turbo oil return doesn't want to be going back to block. The back pressure and horizontal hose won't let it drain properly and it will end up gunked up again. The oil return wants to be going to sump.

Ok, thought it might need to. Is there a kit from someone like brickworks? Or is it a DIY job, the sump is cast alloy (original 16td ?) and I haven't found any info yet.

Think you might have the n/a diesel sump which won't have the fitting welded to it for the return. Brickwerks do a sump adapter kit, block bung (for where you're drain now goes) and a longer return pipe to reach the sump.

Give us some pictures of the engine.
Runaway is usually a breather problem.

Great, will get some more pictures next time I am up at the folks. It does appear to be an NA sump, but the oil definitely was coming from breather system into air intake prior to turbo. The intake is a big plastic pipe with a K&N cone filter, and the breather is plugged into it.

I have not been up the folks for a couple of weeks as they were away. We managed to get a turbo sump, but I am stuck on the drain pipe. Looking at Brickweks their modified drain pipe only fits the standard turbo. Ours appears to be running a K03 turbo which appears to be from the passat. Can anyone confirm? I will get some more photos Wednesday when I'm next up there.

Hopefully managing to piece together a turbo drain pipe using braided pipe and fittings from the local Motorsport supplier, fingers crossed, obviously realised the K03 turbo drain fitting is a flange with two bolts not a screw on nut like the JX turbo.

The latest issue I noticed is the lack of bung in the gearbox bell housing and the flywheel cover plate. The thrust bearing Is squawking a bit, not surprising really as it's not very weatherproof.

If anyone spots anything else in the photos that is concerning, just let me know.
