turbo cooler

When i first got my syncro (1.6td Panel van) i would regularly hear the turbo cooler whizzing away when i had parked the van.

But recently i dont recall hearing it? It may just be that i havnt heard it, but on the times i have checked its been silent..?

Ive been told that the cooler run on the same circuit as the auxillary coolant pump. So would/could this mean that the pump might not be doing its thing either?

What sort of damage might this entail if it isnt sorted pronto? Should i even be driving the van?

Which is this turbo cooler? The auxiliary pump is used to pump water round the engine when it`s stopped, if the temp rises after it`s been switched off to stop the head warping/cracking.

There isn`t a standard fitted turbo cooler that I have seen on the 1.6TD. The turbo is not water-cooled as standard, some of the earlier Golf ones were though apparantly.

As far as i know, its a fan that kicks in to blow cool air over the turbo when you stop driving the van.

Im guessing that the temperature could rise significantly after you stop without cold air being forced past it. Is this right?

Not on my `van, which is standard as built. The auxiliary water pump pumps water round after stopping if there is a significant temp. rise, but there is not such thing for the turbo, air or otherwise, unless someone has added this to your bus?

The fan you used to hear wizzing away, was it at the front of the bus or the rear?

The fan behind the tailight blows air over the centre-housing of the turbo to prevent coking the oil when stopped. Never yet herad a good explanation of the time/temperature logic behind the fan ot aux water pump switching..

Is this fan standard on all 1.6 TD motors Harry? Can`t say I`ve heard or seen of it before, but we all live and learn :)

Only the 1.6TD syncros had them.

Maybe because they'd often be going slow at high power, or with the engine and gearbox underrun tray and muck and grime everywhere, the turbos were thought to be in dire need of some extra cooling.!
