Painting a fuel filler tube?

I finally managed to track down a replacement fuel filler tube for my Syncro. Mine had rusted through, resulting in a hole on the back face of the tube, in that spot where the filler nozzle bashes, when you're putting it in. So, I've got a replacement now, which is in much better condition (no holes!), but there is some surface rust. I'm thinking of rubbing it down, then spraying it with zinc paint, or something similar. Is this a good idea, or is there perhaps a better product to use? Don't want to new one going the same way as the old.....

My concern was that paint might be affected by regular exposure to petrol.
