Can anyone help?
I'm a newbie to this game! got my van last year its converted 1987 transporter van and am loving it. I'm having it resprayed in two weeks and need to get the paint sorted. I've spoken to the local VW dealership but my van is older than their records so they can't help. It is the original colour which like a "blood red" . looking on the net for 1987 colours there are two reds that could be contenders Mars red which looks bit bright or tornado red I think tornado red is probably the nearest. I just wondered though is there a code on the vin plate that would tell me anything?

Also can anyone recommend a good t25 mechanic in the Burnley area as I'll be needing rear wheel bearings for the mot soon

go back to the dozy dealers and find a personage older than 6 and ask them to show you the plate with the colour code on the van

Have a look there mate, the codes for the colours you've mentioned are:

Mars red: LA3A
Tornado red: LY3D

Tornado red's a nice colour, I've had a few tornado red Corrados. VW then went onto Flash red which is also a nice colour.

This is only a paper sticker though and in many cases is missing.

All the body work stickers have bee removed but there is a plate under the passenger seat that has the H3H3AB code stamped on it with H3 being a sales code for Marsala red having viewed a few pictures on line this appears to be the correct colour although its hard to identify exactly as images and colours vary on screen but its a good starting point.

Bob into a body shop with a bit more acumen than the lazy dealer you used and they should be able to scan the colour for you
