Radiator fan operation and wiring.

Decided it be best to post this in the relevant subsection. Hope someone can help.

Van is a LHD 84 1.6.

Ok ive tested the fan through the jumping process as by the wiki, I have a slight problem if the wiki is correct.

Wiki says the red/white coming from the fuse should be in the middle, ours is at the left hand side when plugged in, the middle wire is red/black which is controlling the low fan speed when jumped to the red/white, the right hand side wire is the red/blue which is controlling the high fan speed when jumped to the red/white. The plug doesn't look like its ever been tampered with and the rubber protector is still in place.

Hi, yes its a diesel. I used this guide in the wiki https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Co ... diator_fan" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but our wiring seems to be in different locations so im just checking that all is ok or do I need to swap the wiring about?

The wiki is wrong the red/white goes to an outside terminal if you can see the numbers it's terminal 3.

same here. Could be an answer to my overheating or are the temp sensors wired this way too?

Scienceboy, that's the correct wiring going by mine.

it's a temp switch or thermo switch, not a temp sensor.

Er. Thanks for that.

Perhaps I should also have stated it's temperature not temp?
Newkid, when I bypass I get both speeds, but is the 'switch' wired the same way as the plug? I say this as I've heard the fan on first speed, but never second speed in anger.

From my reading on here its very rare for the fan to need to go into second speed. How high does your temp needle go?

As said......it is extremely rare for the temperature to get high enough for the second stage to operate. The first speed is nearly always sufficient to take the temperate DOWN. The only occasion you are ever likely to switch the second speed is sustained full throttle at low speeds, ie; climbing up a very steep mountain pass in low gear for 5 plus minutes.

Cheers guys. Guess I'm back to sticky thermostat or blocked vent lines (ie I haven't vented all the air)

Replaced stat, stat housing, and bottle cap. Emptied, flushed and refilled system. Did a good venting job and now Harry runs sweet as a nut :)
