Is there a special tool out there for separating bonded door skins? Or can something be adapted?
Currently replacing the lower inner skin of my tail gate and need to get the skins apart.
Cheers
Dave

get the angle grinder with a flexi pad on and wizz round the edge, you can tell when your through as there will be a heat telltale and ahh you'll see
then you may find there are 1 or 2 spots but thats it . outer will pull away and treat the inner little bit like a spam tin.. wind it off oh and howe about pickies ???

Thanks Mike, but if i'm reading that right that's not what I want to do.
The outer skin is folded over the inner, I want to get the inner out from the outer without damaging the outer. I was wondering if there was a tool to bend up the outer folded bit to release the inner skin? which can then be folded back down over the new inner piece afterwards.
Cheers
Dave

Ahh,now your being m,ore specific
have you stripped the paint off the outer skin in the area concerened,? i would expect rot there if the inner is that bad, a picky would be nice in fact why dont you taker picks of the job as it progresses ??
anyhows , if you wire brush off the inner side and check for spots, there will be a few as i doubt it was roll welded, drill these out and i have a tool someplace i made for this, basicaly an old pair of pliers with a very short/sharp bit of industrial hacksaw blade(as in machine saw) welded at the right angle and a groove in the oppo end maybe so it dont slip off the edge and once you get it peeled back a touch all along then some spade pliers, dont know the correct name but the jaws are like an inch wide and flat, bit like a set of panel vise grips.hammer and dolly will be your friend too especially on refitting.
so camera out

Hi Mike, that sounds more like it. I've already cleaned off all the seam sealer and paint, can't see any spot welds there, hopefully the pliers and hacksaw blade trick will work to bend the flange (ha ha!) back.
The inner skin has rotted through in a few points along the lower edge, as well as in the corners around the drain holes, so I've cut most of the lower inner panel away, just need to get the remaining flange out from the folded over outer skin.
I'll see what I can do re pictures, the tailgate is stored over in my Mums garage at the minute, so I basically grab an hour or so out there when ever I'm over visiting.
Thanks
Dave
