Hi,
When I suck the pipe leading into the choke pull down unit it doesn't move the diaphragm. Obviously it needs changing, but is this something that will cause flat spots when driving and to burn lots of fuel? I was led to believe that its just for initial start up and is not required when when on the move.
Any advice would be great prior to a trip to the garage!
The van is slow and has flat spots until speeds over 50 and is very heavy on the fuel….

Choke pull down reduces the amount of choke when engine is revved
This only works on choke when engine revs are raised once hot its not doing anything
Do you have this problem when hot or do you only do short journeys?

What do you call heavy on fuel, these only do 20 mpg anyway

It's seems to do it when hot also? I think it goes to about 20 miles for every £10?

At the weekend, both Itchyfeet and I sucked on my pipe going to the dizzy (no doubt this will appear on the 'taken out of context' thread!!!), he managed to create enough of a vcauum to move the diaphragm whereas I could not.

Sucking is hardly the most scientific method of measurement and I was surprised at how poor my own efforts were. If I'd conducted this simple 'test' on my own, I'd have thought that the mechanism within the dizzy was seized.

Lol, to be fair I did almost lose my eyeballs to the back of my head so I think it's bust!! It's starts fine though with a small rev and the choke appears to be going through the stages. It's just the flat spots and high fuel usage which I though may be caused by it. As you will probably tell I'm a baboon with mechanics

if you CAN'T suck fresh air chances are it's not broken and working

20 miles for £10 is about 12 MPG which is bad.

can we assume this is a DG

could be the choke is stuck and not coming off, take the trunking off when hot and check the choke flap is open and is't flapping about.

could also be bad float needle valve, punctured accelerator pump, bad carb gasket.

VW won't stock may parts for this vehicle anymore, you want Brickwerks, VW heratige or Just Kampers if you must.

As Itchy says, they won't help much / at all = don't bother.

Depending on where you are there are specialists, the afore mentioned Brickwerks but also note that Steve and John of Gasure in Chester (Link = HERE) have a very good reputation for sorting out carb (and other) issues. Then there is Campershack in Lincolnshire too (Link = HERE) who are also very good There will be others too, but those are the "main men" when it comes to getting stuff like this sorted at a garage (instead of by yourself).

Pierburg 2e3's are unique to T3's
they were fitted to other cars in various guises but not any vans.
Itchy and ghost have the right advice.

I would be wary of any "garage" that cannot spell classic.

Yea thanks, being down in Dorset means they are too far. They only deal in t2 or t3s so they know there stuff!
