I fail to see how that CAN work safely. Any pull goes through the locker and up. There appears to be no support under the fair-roller at the back and it's not mounted on a very solid part of the vehicle. Put that under any load and it'll start to take the back of the vehicle apart.

I can see why it's attractive to mount it there, as it should be easy to access, but structurally and also for a good pull I can't help thinking it would be better (certainly for recovering other vehicles) mounted under the front of the cab. Russel's 16 has a very beefy mount 'down there' (oooh-errrrr).

A tirfor hand winch would be a far better tool to start us off. Either that or a high-lift jack with the winch kit as providedby various suppliers - bit cheaper than a Tirfor, but not quite as useful.

When I was with the Peak Park Forestry we used these for recovery all the time. The L/Rs had P.T.O. winches fitted but they were incredibly expensive to maintain and you had to lose the vehicle for a day just to have the winch tested. IIRC we had 4 x 40T Tirfors knicknamed 'Pickfords' 'cos they would move anything, both trees and L/R & trailer combos. Again IIRC the only trouble with them was the ropes were prone to fraying, but they were treat badly.
