Do I need a carb rebuild kit?

I've been having an intermittent problem which returned again today. Went round a roundabout and van spluttered and coughed, loss of power, wouldn't rev etc etc.
This was cured by revving it very high and putting a rag over the top of the two inlets. Ran completely sweet after this. As if a blockage was cleared.
Replaced fuel filter and cleaned the tiny one in the carb itself, but it still happened.
Could a carb rebuild kit from brickwerks help? I am fully aware that fiddling with carbs is not for the novice (me)
Is it an easy thing to do?

Before you spend money on kits.
Just go through the basics.
Check you have good fuel delivery to the carb.
And that you have no water in the fuel system

Cheers. Pulled off the fuel line stuck into a bottle and as I turned it over, plenty of juice, plus, after the rag over the top trick, it ran perfect..... And will do for a while until what I assume is a bit of crud will block something up again.
Is it an easy job to refurb the carb? I know its really not clever to fiddle with carbs, but is a refurb easy without accidentally adjusting any settings?

I think splitting the carb and fitting a rebuild kit is relatively easy but it totally depends on your skills and dexterity
it can be fiddly in places and you must be methodical and very clean, if you can't do that don't bother starting.
if you do decide to have a go then clean the exterior of carb before splitting it.

Hello,
I've said this before..
Valve timing... ignition timing.. then carburation..
What is your ignition set up..
What is the timing set at..at 800 rpm and at 3000 rpm..
Air leaks.. tired ignition module ( if Hall effect)..leaking distributor diaphragm.. poor earth on base of dizzy clamp..coil on the way out..
All good clean fun..
Final heresy.. put a 3 dollar fuel filter into the fuel line between the pump and the carbs feed

.. then you will at least see what is going on..
Carb overhaul kit is all well and good.. but then they need tuning..vacuum gauge..CO meter..
Next episode of 'Ooops' is setting up the engine..
Cordialement..

Hi Sarran
Sorry for the late reply.
I see your point but I think the problem is with the carb. After "vamping" it with a rag over the top, it cleared what ever the issue was. Bit embarrasing to say but it was the AA man who did it!
I am thinking about replacing the fuel lines. When I took the fuel line off to check the supply, I could see that the inside of the fuel line had eroded a bit. Just a hunch but I think the hose is breaking up and bits are finding their way to the carb?
