spluttering engine

Hi, any help on the following would be appreciated:

1.9 watercooled splutters in 4th gear, usually when cruising around 60/65. Taking foot off gas then gently putting foot down usually solves without losing too much speed. Will then be ok for another 5-10 miles when it will do it again. Never done it around town. I am not mechanically minded but was advised could be carb problem so took to a specialist. They adjusted carb mixture, cleaned ht leads and charged me £90 + vat for doing so. taken out for 1st time since and does exactly the same!

They also advised me "engine was running weak" and advised I change dist cap, rotor arm and leads. Is this likely to solve the prob or is something else likely? Should I take back to same place and complain they havn't solved prob or are these things always trial and error?

Or am I better going to a vw/t25 specialist, anyone know anyone Southampton area? I am planning big EU tour this summer and want all running good and peace of mind!!

Thanks, simon

check fuel pump delivery the shaft wears and can reduce flow perhaps its gradually losing fuel level in the chamber as you motor along when you throttle off it catches up with it's self?

Don't take it to the same place for more work but ask for a refund as they didn't supply any parts and didn't fix the problem. If you paid by credit card have a word with the card company as they have paid for the service so far and if you are not happy as far as I know they can withhold the payment.

As said could well be poor fuel supply, there is enough in the float chamber to get you up to speed but then it runs out and the supply is not enough, but 5-10 mins running OK would make me suspect it's maybe not that, I'd expect it to happen continuously once you reached a certain speed if it was blocked filters but change it anyway :ok
