Long shot but does anyone know what the weight of a rear door with standard glass in weighs, perhaps someone has needed to send one by courier or perhaps someone was bored one day scratched their head and wondered how heavy the rear door is on their van.

Top secret project

Ok then my X top secret project is a slide out system that will extend the length of the van by 1.5m, thus enabling the bed to be made at all times and give us a nice sitting area. If this goes well then I am planning on doing one for the side too. I have done the drawings and gathered the material. The van is stripped out and the build is ready to go. Just need to talk over some things with the manufacturer of the sliding rails.

Yes kind of, but not as elaborate or as long and I hope it isnt going to cost me £50,000. I know some people might regard it as a stupid idea but then who would have thought that sawing the roof of a van and making it pop up would take off.

On the contrary - this is a really interesting idea and I hope you keep us updated on this forum as you go along. Are you going to try to get the mechanism to fit behind the interior fittings, so that you still have some permanent storage space, seats etc?

I am only planning on having it slide out 1.5m, thus when it is inside the van the sliding door can still used to get in and out and the kitchen/ cupboards etc can remain in place as will the bench seat. Only the full width bed would be used in the slide out itself legs outside head above the engine. Plus it will be nice to work on the engine bay in the rain .I am planning on putting some pics up on the forum when the project is a stage that I am happy with hence the previous post of "top secret project" didnt want to look as If I have failed but now the cat is out of the bag best make sure I dont.

So I guess nobody knows the weight of a rear door then ?

Out of curiosity will still be able to access the engine through the engine hatch?

Thanks that's good of you, I have begun to construct the frame and it is all going well so far, yes you can access the engine hatch, either when the slide out is in or out, all be it when it is out you would have to stand in the opening for the hatch, however it would also be undercover which is handy with our weather. Oh the hatch is also going to be lockable from the inside and secure for obvious reasons.

As the project is still in development, due to the awkward shape of the rear end, it is still possible that I may not incorporate the rear door into the slide out frame but give the slide out frame its own door. All down to the weight of the finished article, hoping for around 60K. About the weight of anouther passenger, would like to get it down a bit more but I dont want to compromise on longevity and quality. Still if someone asked for a lift to Cornwall in the promise of making your bed every evening (no innuendos please)to save you from having to do it.

.. have often thought that if you have a twin-slider van, the second door could be made into a slide out too. This could take the kitchen box with it and leave much more space in the centre of the van. Would make having a turntable under the driver's seat more meaningful!

I've thought about a pull out side section as well

However, the thing putting me off is mine's a hightop, and I'd want the section of hightop above to pull out too, otherwise you'd be trying to cook with your face 2 inches from the inside of the roof!

I guess making a full height slide out section would be waaay more complex.

I've also thought about a fixed (rather than slide out) rear extension pod, along the lines of what Dehler did to the T4 (google it) to add a bit of extra room and storage
