Thanks, I keep forgetting to check the tube for vids on this type of thing.
I thought that was how it should come off but it has been raining almost nonstop for the past week and when I attempted it (by touch alone) in the dark with the doors shut I was worried that I might snap the arms. It seems like one of the arms has already been repaired, so I'll have proper look in daylight when it isn't raining.

Now the rain stopped for a short time I had a go and it it came off, though I was concerned about bending the tabs quite as much as I had to. and I noticed that one of them has already been repaired before.

How was it repaired? I broke one of mine because it snagged on my jeans as I twisted out of the seat to get something from the back of the van. Glue doesn't seem to cut the mustard - at least not the glue I used at any rate....

A slim piece of metal has been shaped into a hook and riveted onto the side, see the photo:

Ahh right, thanks for that. My plan 'B' was to fix a 2 strips of thin metal to the detached bit of plastic. I was concerned about how many bends would cause them to split through metal fatigue though so I was also considering leather.

One tab broke on my van in 1995 or 96. I am still considering how to repair it.

Use high carbon steel then temper it when you have finished fashioning it. But in reality a stiffish piece would make the plastic flex when you needed it to so you wouldn't need a flexible piece of steel.
That has been on the list also for the past 10 years!
