I'm looking to replace a non-functioning choke pull-down unit on a Pierburg 2E3.

Brickwerks are currently showing out of stock;

VWHeritage have these two

This one for a 2E3 post 1985 - £40

This one for a 2E3 pre-1985 - £80!!!

But ...... then they also have this chap for a 2E2 which has two vacuum ports ....
This is only £10.

So - is there any change that I can use the cheapo version on a 2E3 ??? Maybe by blocking up one of the ports?
And anyone understand the difference between a 'pre' and 'post' 1985 unit (other than the £30 price difference)!?

I'm guessing that the two port version is like the one fitted to mine - shown Here?

Jury is still out on whether than affects the running of mine.

Your df didn't come with a pierburg so it may well have a late dg carb
Have a look and see what the code is
025 129 015 A is the early carb and H and J suffix are the late

There is a different dimension a1 of 3.3 mm on the early to 2.6 on the late that dim is very different on 2e2 along with the a dim
Not sure exactly what it referes to

The restrictor stops the choke flap snapping open when the throttle is used.
It smoothes the flap opening and stops the engine stalling from a weak mixture during warm up.


The worst thing a pulldown can do is leak air.
because it only gets used for 6 mins of engine start any operating issues are soon passed.
except when it leaks.

Has yours arrived yet? Mine arrived this morning, and it appears to be the same as the £10 item linked above, with the 'pre-modification' being just a blanking plug over the 'B' port. Is it wrong of me to feel a bit cheated, having paid £30 to get one of these delivered?

Ditto. I'm not sure. I'm hoping that the one we both got from Brickies isn't the same pull-down as that £10 one I linked to - I was really happy that they had managed to source some and send them out so fast after my request to them .... now not so sure but I'd like to think that they wouldn't have a marked up like that ...

Well the part number on the box is the same as the part number in the VW Heritage listing, and it certainly looks identical to the photo in that listing. If it's good enough for Brickwerks to sell for the 2E3 then I guess that answers the earlier question about its suitability. But yeah, it's dented my confidence a bit.

Just got the box out of the bin;
It has part number 100-577-756 but below the part number it says 'replacing 030129220A'
And that part number (030129220A) is the part number for the £10 one I quoted above ....
... so, yes, now I do feel like I just paid £15 extra for a rubber bung ...
... someone please tell me why I shouldn't ... ??

(maybe the fact that the one on VWHeritage is 'Out Of Stock' .....maybe...)

They did the hard work of testing if it worked and they have to hold stock and open them up and mod them
Yes you can do it yourself now you know but you can't blame them for adding a markup for their trouble
I doubt they sell many each year

You did have the choice of risking the £10 one but you chose to play it safe and go with a trusted supplier

True - they're a trusted business, and I don't mind paying for peace of mind. But presumably veedubmachine are making a profit on this item at £7.38, so at £26.52 that's expensive peace of mind in my opinion. I don't believe they've had to open up the unit - there's apparently just a rubber bung over one of the ports.

I'm not here to bash Brickwerks - they offer first class knowledgable service and keep stocks of a vast range of spares, but it's taught me not to have such blind faith.

We pay more than £10 for them, it's that simple.
We don't deal with that particular manufacturer and we buy one or 2 of those at a time rather than 100 or 200.
They fit, they work.
On that part I think we make less than £3.
The Topran part is there as a stop gap, as a buffer when supply of the Pierburg one is sketchy.
At the workshop we would fit Pierburg over the Topran one all day every day.

Thing is, unless you had come to us you would would be stuck with out any as you wouldn't have known to modify it

If you want to buy cheap and cheerful do so. I'll stick with Brickwerks whenever I can thanks!
