Hello again. Anyone know anything about 240v single phase electric motors, testing etc? I think mine has failed on my log splitter. It's only about three years old, but stored in a shed and not had a great deal of use. Machine Mart are saying that as it's out of guarantee they aren't particularly interested, will charge £20 +vat and tarnsport costs just to look at it and won't reimburse me even if it has failed before it really should. Also want well over £120 for a new motor which is getting on for the thick end of a new log splitter....which could well fail in three years.

Usual suspects are the brushes that have seized in the guides.

So I presume you replaced the capacitor to no avail.

I don't think it will have any brushes I would have thought it would be an induction motor. I might be wrong though.

Yes thanks. Machine Mart are not on my Christmas Card list at the moment.

Do you have a multi -meter & the ability to use it. If the motor is getting the correct voltage supplied to it then the most likely cause of the problem is one of the coils have over heated. If you remove the end cover & can smell burnt paint then that is the most likely cause & you can test each coil for open circuit or short to the motor body with the meter set to resistance. They are repairable try a google search for local electric motor repairers. Their (Machine mart) price for a new 2 HP motor seems quite competitive, they have shot up in price lately it appears.
