Hi there,
I have won an engine on eBay which has been striped and rebuilt with new bearings ,rings and seal and was just wondering what sort of checks I can make to make sure it is as good as they say it is.
I suppose it would be like making sure it turns over ,and crank end float and the like.
I advice greatfully appreciated thanks dazz :ok

bore taper
bore ovality
old lifters?
cam lobe rounding
correct main bearing shells
valve seats
valve stems
valve guides

and so on

basically strip it down and renew it all :ok

receipts / photos of work during rebuild - if the builder is any good otherwise belive nothing

none of the above then it is just word for word.

also get a written warrenty with the engine number on and the seller to sign it in his name.

take some pics of the engine AND the seller including numbers

depending on what your paying , and remember if its cheap.....

is it a long block or full engine?

a good rebuilt engine will have all NEW parts where available ie oil pump , pushrod tubes , water pump , core plugs ect ect - this will tell the quality / expense thats been put in!

i would NEVER buy an Aircooled engine , that has not han new exhaust valves fitted. ask the seller , check by taking rocker shaft off - very simple and quick .

but a rebuilt engine thrown together with old parts / new bearings isant so good

Spose so...was it described as having a warranty.

Its a bit of a tricky one if you cant see it running.....as the seller would rightly claim that you buggered it when fitting it whilst the buyer would claim it was a nail.

Spose it all comes down to a level of trust and "genuineness..."

No it doesn't say anything about warranty ,they had it rebuilt to go into a project but found out it would suit the vehicle .
The seller has a 100% feedback which I suppose counts for something, anyway I am going to pick it up on Saturday with finger crossed.
Thanks for all the advice dazz
