In the process of trying to remove one of the petrol expansions tanks , the nut that holds it in is causing me some problems.

It moved a bit then got stuck after a few turns.

Im thinking of using some heat to help get it off , as the expansion tank doesn't hold any petrol - Im hoping this is relatively safe? Does anyone disagree?

just clean the threads with wirebrush and plus gas then cover threads with grease and carefully undo the nut , the heat will probably melt the tank what you will need to replace

The tank will hold vapours.I wouldn't go near it with a naked flame if i were you.

Don't go anywhere near it with a flame. The expansion tanks hold petrol vapour. Petrol doesn't burn it the vapour that does.

Sorry I should have mentioned, I've had no petrol in van for a month or two now. The main tank has been removed , whilst I clean it up - replace some pipes and grommets.

I'd be very surprised if it the expansion tank had any vapours in it. Two of the three pipes have also been removed for this long.

But your right , the heat could well melt the tank.

I've tried cleaning the threads with a brush and some penetrating oil already. Perhaps I should try again.

The only alternative I can think of is try and make a few cuts in the nut and plonk a screw driver in?

if it shears,bung a nut and bolt through to secure it
