I'm looking into the diesel gearbox situation also.

I have a dy gearbox from a 1.6 na van and it has without doubt the worst gear ratios in the world! Making it really loud at motorway speeds.

I'm looking for the best 4 speed box to replace it with and it's looking like the petrol box could be the way forward, will report back.

Cheers

I had a 1Y paired with a DM gearbox code. Although it wasn't the quickest by any means it pulled well and never struggled to hold speed on motorways.

So was that high 3000s revs at 60?

I always refer people to this chart - shows the revs at 60mph for different gearbox codes on standard wheels/tyres:-
