Oil Consumption

Just wrapping up our european trip where we've done about 4500 miles over 5 months. I took a 5L jug of oil when we started and put the last in yesterday - so that's 900mi to a L.
Does that seem normal for an old (330k km) 1.6TD JX?

0.9l per 1,000miles is within spec and not surprising on a TD with this amount of miles. However, I think you know yourself, that is a lot of oil and not ideal. I would think most owners are using much less..250 - 400ml every thousand miles being the norm perhaps.
Obviously the high speed motoring (relatively lol) doesn't help (engines use a lot more oil at speed) but as long as it runs well, passes it's MOT emissions and you can manage the consumption (don't allow the level to drop below minimum on the dipstick) it will be fine.

There could be other factors involved as well....oil viscosity could be one. leaky turbo another, plus valve stem oil seals are also prone to going hard allowing oil to by-pass the valve guides. This was a very common job back in the day (without head removal) and with the use of compressed air and special valve spring tools replacing them was an hour and a halves job.
